Domain name change, ices -> oden

An announcement was made in early 2019 the institute would be migrating to a new domain, oden.utexas.edu is now oden.utexas.edu. This document serves the purpose of communicating information about how the domain name change will impact users at the Oden institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences. Please check back regulary for updates.

Warning

There is the possibility of unforseen issues which were not taken into account while migrating to the new domain. We will address them as we encounter them. Please email us at rt@oden.utexas.edu if you encounter any issues or have further questions about this FAQ.

Oden website

The institute web site has been fully migrated to the oden domain. A redirect for https://www.oden.utexas.edu/ will now permanantly direct to https://www.oden.utexas.edu. Please update your bookmarks you may have. The old address will remain indefinitely.

Centers and groups websites

The center and group websites are hosted on a single server. A page such as https://cco.oden.utexas.edu/ will redirect permanantly to https://cco.oden.utexas.edu/

Users web pages

Like the Oden website information above, all users public web pages have been redirected to http://users.oden.utexas.edu/~<uid>

Office 365

Those persons with ices.utexas.email addresses have now been given oden.utexas.edu addresses. Read the section Update Primary Email Address in the Office 365 Management for Mailbox Owners documentation to learn how to change your primary email address.

The @oden.utexas.edu email addresses will remain indefinitely with the exception of when an appointment ends, it will be subject to the rules for deprovisioning mailboxes as outlined by ITS.

Help request system, RT

Sysnet’s help request system has been updated. Users needing help can now submit help requests to rt@oden.utexas.edu. The email address RT will remain indefinitely.

Desktops and servers

All hosts on the institutes domain name servers and UT’s domain name servers have been updated with the new domain. Hosts can now be addressed with the new domain:

<oden-uid>@<hostname>.oden.utexas.edu

The first time you connect using ssh, a message similar to below will appear:

$ ssh pebkac@woodard.oden.utexas.edu
The authenticity of host 'woodard.oden.utexas.edu (10.157.14.103)' can't be established.
ECDSA key fingerprint is SHA256:AcO4sBX+1JjlwD2dXePItX7U3dVRwOyzzWcsuAxy+ic.
Are you sure you want to continue connecting (yes/no)?

This is a typical warning when connecting to a host you have never connected to before. It’s informational and safe to connect.

Hosts on the @ices domain are not permanent and ultimately need to be addressed on the @oden domain. An announcement about removing the hosts from the oden.utexas.edu domain will go out early 2020.

Printing

All printers have been migrated over to the new domain. The CUPS client on all the Linux desktops have been updated to point to cups.oden.utexas.edu and did not impact printing.

All Macs, iMacs and Macbooks, are impacted by this change, they use bonjour to configure printing services. If you experience issues with printing from the wired network from your Mac, you will need to remove and re-add the printer. Instructions and explanations about our printers can be found Printing
