J. Tinsley Oden (1936 - 2023)
J. Tinsley Oden was a pioneer of computational mechanics and the founding architect of UT Austin’s interdisciplinary enterprise in computational science and engineering. He established and led the Institute in its successive forms (TICOM/TICAM/ICES) for decades, recruiting world-class faculty, launching the graduate program in Computational Science, Engineering, and Mathematics, and shaping a culture of rigorous mathematics with high-impact applications. His dedication to mentoring the next generation of researchers and scientists was legendary. Oden and his wife Barbara (1943 - 2023) fostered an incredible sense of community in the Institute that now bears his name.
