Biography

Sam grew up in Hawaii and Wisconsin before attending college at the University of Chicago, where he completed bachelor's and master's degrees in Chemistry in 2014. He then spent two years at the University of Oxford before returning to the US for his PhD. He began his PhD at the University of Chicago under the supervision of Tim Berkelbach (Chemistry) and Jon Weare (Statistics). He moved with his advisors to Columbia University, and completed his PhD in Chemical Physics there in 2022. During his PhD, he also did research at Berkeley Lab under the supervision of Jeff Neaton and Jack Deslippe.

Sam is passionate about addressing climate change and mentoring students. He enjoys spending his free time outdoors, hiking and camping.
