Biography

Dr. Morrison received his B.A. in Physics (Anthropology minor) at the University of California San Diego in June, 1972. He got his M.S. in Physics at the University of California San Diego in March, 1974, and his Ph.D. in Physics at the University of California San Diego in June, 1979.

His employment has been as follows: 1992– Professor, 1988–92 Associate Professor 1981–88,  Assistant Professor, The University of Texas at Austin, Physics Department, Austin, TX;  1981– Staff Scientist, The University of Texas at Austin, Institute for Fusion Studies, Austin, TX 1979–1981;  Postdoctoral Research Associate, Princeton University, Plasma Physics Lab, Princeton, NJ 1972–1979; Teaching/Research Assoc., University of California, San Diego, Physics Dept., La Jolla, CA

Dr. Morrison is a mathematical/theoretical physicist with broad interests. He is a skeptic by nature and finds the most satisfaction with science that tends toward mathematical rigor or proximity to experimental data. As a member of the Institute for Fusion Studies, he has worked on basic and applied plasma physics problems. He has been associated with the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Program for twenty years, and as a member of its faculty have worked on basic and applied fluid mechanics problems. He has investigated the nonlinear Hamiltonian dynamics of few and infinite degree-of-freedom systems for many years. It is this brand of theoretical nonlinear dynamics, Hamiltonian chaos theory, that he finds most interesting. He has also worked on developing and applying advanced computational algorithms that preserve geometrical structure.
