Biography

Bo Zhao is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering & Sciences at the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin). He received his Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the faculty of UT-Austin, he was a postdoctoral researcher and junior faculty at Harvard Medical School.

Zhao's research lies in the area of computational imaging and medical imaging with special emphasis on the modality of magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Specifically, his group focuses on developing novel mathematical models, computational algorithms, and data acquisition schemes to address inverse problems in MR imaging. His group takes unique approaches that integrate spin physics, information processing, and advanced computing to push the performance limits of the imaging systems. His research has been recognized with several awards, including an NIH Pathway to Independence Award (2019) and an NIH Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award Fellowship (2017).

Bo Zhao is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM), and International Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM). He serves as a member of the Computational Imaging Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society (IEEE-SPS) and a member of the Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing Technical Committee of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (IEEE-EMBS).
