Biography

Ionut Farcas holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Automation and Applied Informatics from the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca in Romania. He afterwards obtained a Master of Science degree in Computational Science and Engineering from the Technical University of Munich in Germany. In 2020, Ionut obtained his PhD degree in Scientific Computing, with distinction, from the Technical University of Munich, under the supervision of Prof. Hans-Joachim Bungartz. Both his Master's and PhD studies were funded through scholarships offered by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). As of January 2020, Ionut Farcas is a research fellow at the Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences at UT Austin, where he works with Dr. Karen Willcox and Dr. Frank Jenko.

Broadly speaking, Ionut's research interests lie at the intersection between applied mathematics, computer science and physics. His current research is focused on scientific machine learning, which is used to develop reduced-order models for combustion in rocket engines, and on multifidelity methods to quantify uncertainty in plasma physics applications. Moreover, Ionut is also interested in context-aware model hierarchies (sparse grid approximations, multilevel and multifidelity methods) for uncertainty propagation and Bayesian inference in high-dimensional, computationally expensive problems, and in high-performance computing.
