The Oden Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences is honored to celebrate the life and legacy of renowned mathematician Ivo Babuška with a special exhibit commemorating what would have been his 100th birthday this year. The exhibit opens Feb. 23, 2026, in the Peter O’Donnell, Jr. Building at the University of Texas at Austin. The exhibit highlights moments from his early beginnings in his home country of Czechoslovakia, to his retirement from The University of Texas at Austin in 2018 at age 92.

Finite Element Method

Babuška was world-renowned for his foundational work on the finite element method (FEM). His pioneering contributions in the fields of mathematics, applied mathematics, numerical methods, and computational mechanics were unparalleled.  His work fundamentally shaped the theoretical underpinnings of modern computational science and the proof of the Babuška–Lax–Milgram theorem bears his name. Throughout his career, Babuška was the recipient of numerous accolades including election to the National Academy of Engineering and the European Academy of Sciences.

Interdisciplinary Collaboration

Babuška was a natural fit for the interdisciplinary environment at the Oden Institute. A civil engineer, he had a transformative experience leading a team of mathematicians during the development of the Orlik Dam near Prague. After completing that project, Babuška was convinced that scientific progress thrives in a collaborative environment, a principle that guided his work throughout his career, including his 23 years at the Institute, where he helped shape its intellectual community.

He mentored graduate students and served as a trusted sounding board for colleagues, sparking conversations that often extended well beyond the boundaries of research. He also launched a bi-weekly student seminar, now called the Babuška Forum, that was designed to cultivate open dialogue and collaboration across the computational sciences.

Legacy of Giving

Ivo and his wife, Renata – a mathematician in her own right – shared a lifelong commitment to nurturing the next generation of computational scientists. Throughout their lifetimes, Renata was both a steadfast supporter of Ivo’s vision and an intellectual companion. Together at the Oden Institute, they founded The Ivo & Renata Babuška Endowed Excellence Fund to support the Babuška Forum and The Ivo & Renata Babuška Scholarship to support CSEM students.

Ivo  Babuška held the Robert B. Trull Chair in Engineering and was named the first recipient of the W. A. "Tex'' Moncrief, Jr., Distinguished Faculty Fellowship in Computational Sciences. He died April 12, 2023, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at age 97. His work lives on through his elegant proofs, the many students he mentored, and in the courage of engineers who, thanks to him, are ready to sign their blueprints.

The exhibit is currently located at the Oden Institute, on the fourth floor of the Peter O’Donnell, Jr. Building, 201 E 24thStreet. Further details on Babuška’s life and research contributions can be found at the following link ivo100
