Thomas J.R. Hughes Selected to Receive 2021 SIAM Ralph E. Kleinman Prize

Dr. Tom Hughes, professor of aerospace engineering and engineering mechanics, and core faculty at the Oden Institute has been awarded SIAM's 2021 Ralph E. Kleinman Prize.

Awarded every two years, the Ralph E. Kleinman Prize is given to one individual for outstanding research that bridges the gap between mathematics and applications. Work using high-level mathematics and/or the invention of new mathematical tools to solve applied problems from engineering, science, and technology is most sought after from the selection committee.

Hughes was specifically recognized for his “influential and profound contributions to computational science and engineering and their impact on engineering design and simulation, while creating entirely new fields of mathematical research.”

The Kleinman Prize, named in honor of the American mathematician best known for his application of integral equations to inverse problems, is scheduled to be be awarded in July 2021 at the 2021 SIAM Annual Meeting (AN21), in Spokane, Washington.
