Abstract

** This seminar will be presented LIVE in person in POB 6.304 and streamed live via Zoom.**

I will present some of our recent results for trying to understand and control transitional and turbulent boundary layer flows. Our group has been developing a new means of preventing roughness-induced transition using small surface textures to remove or lessen the impact of disturbances introduced by unavoidable surface contamination (e.g., dead bugs). We explore the problem in terms of the vorticity dynamics right near the surface.We have also begun an effort to develop a new way to inject polymers into an already turbulent boundary layer by trying to direct the polymer specifically into vortex cores. And we are separately examining different ways to control Large Scale Motions using synthetic jet actuators.

Biography

David Goldstein is the Stanley P. Finch Professor of Aerospace Engineering. He leads the Computational Fluid Physics Lab which works in the areas of turbulent and laminar flow DNS but also rarefied flows, and gas dynamics related to planetary atmospheric science.  He currently has active funded collaborations with Profs. Varghese and Bakolas in ASE, Dr. Larry Trafton in Astronomy, as well as groups at Texas A & M, George Mason University, NASA Ames, JPL, UC Berkeley and Princeton. Current work is funded mostly by NASA, Air Force and NSF.
