The Center for Numerical Analysis (CNA) was started by David Young in 1970, and it is now a research center within the Oden Institute. The mission of CNA is to promote research and development in numerical analysis and to aid in related educational activities. The focus ranges from theoretical foundations of computational mathematics to applications in science and engineering.
Examples of current research in the mathematics of numerical algorithms are the development and analysis of fast multipole methods for wave propagation, multiscale algorithms for stiff dynamical systems, approximation properties of Gaussian beams and efficient methods for Hamilton-Jacobi equations. Examples of applications are kinetic models for plasmas and nanodevices, visibility algorithms with applications in homeland security, image processing, electromagnetic scattering, oil reservoir modeling and seismic imaging.
